Hey, I’m Eugene.
I help students learn programming in an intuitive way
About Me
👋 I'm Eugene Lu, a Vancouver-based private tutor specializing in computer science and programming. I graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in Computer Engineering and have over four years of industry experience as a software engineer. Currently, I work at an EdTech startup, where I build tools that empower teachers and students worldwide. Seeing the positive impact of my work on improving learning experiences inspired me to start tutoring and explore education more in-depth.
While I’m an avid self-learner, my true joy comes from sharing knowledge and watching others discover the excitement of learning. Whether it’s guiding a classmate through a challenging coding problem, hosting a knowledge session to educate my peers at work, or even coaching a friend in badminton, empowering others in their learning journey has always been a passion of mine.I bring this same enthusiasm and dedication to every tutoring session, offering students a mentor who is genuinely invested in their success.
Why Me?
Personalized 1:1 Learning: My sessions are exclusively one-on-one, giving you my full attention and support. I use a heavily personalized approach where I ensure that every lesson is tailored to your specific goals. As a result, I’m able to better help you understand core concepts and develop skills to solve problems independently—a lifelong ability that will serve you well in any field.
Industry Experience: With hands-on experience in the tech industry, I bring practical insights that go beyond the classroom. I show you how the concepts you learn can be applied in real-world situations, even beyond traditional tech careers.
Confidence-Boosting Environment: Programming can be challenging, and it’s common for students to doubt their abilities. I’m here to guide you with patience and empathy, helping you build your intuition and connect the dots. Together, we’ll work through the difficulties, so you can gain the confidence needed to excel.
Curriculum Mastery
Tailored support to help you excel in your school’s programming curriculum. We’ll work together on classwork, assignments, and exam preparation, ensuring you stay on track. In addition, I’ll prepare supplementary resources designed to deepen your understanding and reinforce key concepts, giving you a stronger foundation in computer science.

Industry Insights
You might be surprised to learn that I actually had no plans of going into computer engineering at first. Even though I took computer science in high school, I struggled to see how the topics connected to my future or real-world applications.
To help students bridge that gap, I include a complimentary 15-minute segment at the end of each session where we can discuss any questions you might have about engineering, technology, career paths, universities, and more. I provide unique insights into the industry and the vast opportunities that programming can unlock, no matter your intended major.

My curriculum is customized to meet each student's school requirements and individual needs. For high school students, I primarily focus on provincial computer science curriculums, as well as AP Computer Science. Additionally, I can support introductory post-secondary courses and younger students just starting out.
-
Each session is tailored to the student’s specific needs and current coursework. I typically start by addressing any priorities or questions the student wants to focus on. Following that, I provide relevant practice materials aligned with their goals. Please note that I do not complete assignments on behalf of students. I prioritize maintaining academic integrity and fostering genuine growth in the subject, rather than simply assisting with tasks.
For online sessions, I use Google Hangouts. For in-person sessions, students should bring their laptop and any relevant course materials.
-
In my Curriculum Mastery package, I specialize in guiding students through their established school curriculum. This package is designed for middle school, high school, and first-year university students.
My Programming Exploration package is designed for both K-12 students and adults who are curious about programming and want to explore it at their own pace.
-
Extra practice materials are available upon request. While the content may not perfectly align with your school’s course due to variations, the materials I provide will be fundamentally relevant and widely applicable in both academic and industry settings.
-
I typically use the most popular programming languages taught in schools, such as Java and Python. However, my emphasis is on building strong fundamentals that are transferable across any language, aligning with industry expectations.
-
Invoices for all sessions will be sent with options to pay by credit or debit card through Acuity. For in-person sessions, cash payments are also accepted.
-
Currently, I’m offering tutoring exclusively in computer programming, but other subjects may be available in the future.
